About Us

Mission Statement
Our goal is to help you have the best paddling experiences possible.

Commitment
Paddle Shack came into being in the late 1990s with the intent of sharing the founder's passion for interacting with the water world and natural elements that surround us thru kayaking, canoeing and sailing.

To that goal, we remain committed to offering products that we have personally reviewed and are satisfied represent a commitment by the manufacturer to functionality and quality.

Skill development is recognized as an important part of safe and enjoyable time on the water. To that end, Paddle Shack offers a variety of introductory and advanced instructional programs supervised / run by American Canoe Association certified instructors. Staff members are active paddlers who enjoy and share time on the water skills and experiences.

Location
Our original location (5045 Mays Landing Road, Mays Landing) was a local landmark. The exterior display of colorful kayaks & canoes offered a visual enjoyed by all who passed by and offered an indication of the rewards met by visitors. New visitors always remarked on the amount and presentation of paddle sports products offered in our tiny building. More importantly, they enjoyed the personal, knowledgeable one on one professional service they experienced.

After an unending search for an on water location, early spring 2013 we relocated to Patcong Creek on the border of Egg Harbor Twp and Somers Point. The new location, with a larger showroom offers more interior display, but more importantly, Patcong Creek offers an excellent location for introducing new paddlers to the pleasures of paddling.

Both new and experienced paddlers enjoy the protected and relaxed surroundings of the tidal marsh areas surrounding us along the creek. Wading and shore birds such as Egrets, Great Blue & Night Herons are common, as are various ducks and geese. The sky above the creek offers various raptor sightings such as Red Tail and other hawks. The real and unexpected treats are the active Osprey and Bald Eagle nests which afford paddlers visual interactions with these indicators of our natural habitat's health.

Staff
As a small shop, we offer personalized one on one service. Our staff members are paddlers of different ability levels, but all share a passion for water sports. We will discuss your paddling priorities and help guide you to the best solution.

Our founder, George Sluker is an accomplished seaman with over 35 years sailing experience, holding a commercial captain's license with a Master - Near Coastal rating. With off-shore and in-shore adventures, solo and crewed, from Maine to Key West, he has a profound and accomplished respect for the power and pleasures of all waters.
"Captain Kayak" (a moniker derived from his sailing and kayaking abilities) has served on the Board of Directors of The Professional Paddlesports Association, demonstrated skill ability and instructor proficiency via American Canoe Association certification in various kayaking disciplines, and remains committed to sharing and creating safe and pleasurable paddling experiences for all - young and old, new or experienced.
